Artist Statement

Soul Journal is a collection of digital illustrations that first emerged in 2017 as a spontaneous search for catharsis. Through these drawings, Zumbambico intends to give shape and space to her emotions in order to understand them. Rather than a collection of final pieces, Soul Journal is a set of ongoing rituals, through which the artist experiences a transformation that allows her to release or affirm something from her soul. What matters here is the process and how she ends up feeling afterwards.

These 6 illustrations belong to Soul Journal and are specifically referring both to the physical and emotional pain caused by carrying someone else’s burdens, especially those related to familial dynamics and inherited weights.

Isabel Zuluaga Mesa is a Colombian artist, best known as Zumbambico. She has focused her art on her experience as a woman born and raised in a country with a deep colonialist heritage, where the land has been exploited historically by those in power and where both beauty and behavioral standards are imposed on women on a daily basis. She thinks of her work as the possibility of creating her own emancipated territory.  A place to break free from external pressures and just be; connected to her body and emotions. Zumbambico has exhibited her work in collective exhibitions in Bogotá, Barcelona, Portugal, and Rio de Janeiro. In 2019, she had a solo show “Inner Landscapes” at Hae (Maastricht, The Netherlands) and in 2022, she exhibited her work at WALTZ, an event created in collaboration with poet Joshua Burton (Houston,TX).
